Case study: APEX solution solves regulatory and complex inverter challenges

Over the past two decades, APEX has established itself as a leader in delivering cutting-edge solar PV solutions, integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and genset control to optimise energy utilisation. With more than 250 Microgrid Controller Systems (MCS) installed across various applications, APEX has consistently demonstrated its commitment to innovation and efficiency. Our projects focus on diesel avoidance, which remains a significant cost concern for many buildings. By selecting our MCS, clients are assured of optimal use of diverse energy sources, leading to substantial cost savings and enhanced sustainability.

One notable project we completed was at the Cape Teaching and Leadership Institute (CTLI). We collaborated with Motla Engineering to deliver a comprehensive energy solution that met strict regulatory requirements while maximising efficiency.

The CTLI project presented a significant challenge involving the integration and control of multiple inverter technologies at various main electrical points. The City of Cape Town (CoCT) mandates DNP3 control for any site with over 100kWp solar installed. APEX was the only viable solution on the market capable of meeting these stringent requirements. This issue is increasingly prevalent, not only in commercial markets, but also in residential estates where cumulative small systems reach the 100kWp threshold.

Challenge

The project required the implementation of DNP3 control for a site with:

  • Multiple inverters
  • Various main electrical points
  • Compliance with CoCT’s regulations for sites exceeding 100kWp solar capacity

Specific technical challenges included:

  • Understanding and managing the load of eight different transformers
  • Throttling twelve distinct inverters individually

Solution

APEX provided its advanced Microgrid Controller System (MCS) and APEX Edge devices, which were crucial in meeting the project’s demands.

Key aspects of the solution included:

  • Detailed load analysis across eight transformers
  • Individual control and throttling of twelve different inverters
  • Compliance with DNP3 control requirements set by CoCT

Collaboration

The partnership between APEX and Motla Engineering was pivotal in the project's success. APEX supplied the necessary products and ongoing support, while Motla Engineering managed the on-site implementation. They ensured that the system was correctly installed, seamlessly integrated, and fully operational for optimal performance.

Results

The successful deployment of APEX’s MCS and Edge devices at the CTLI had a significant impact on their energy management, including full compliance with CoCT’s regulatory requirements.

Conclusion

The CTLI project highlights APEX’s capability to deliver innovative and compliant energy solutions in complex settings, while showcasing the importance of effective collaboration with implementation partners like Motla Engineering. By addressing the specific needs of sites with diverse inverter technologies and high solar capacity, APEX continues to lead in sustainable energy management.
